Yes. Our Community Treatment program is equipped to support youth facing mental health challenges. While we do not have medical staff (such as psychiatrists or nurses) and cannot prescribe medication, we provide comprehensive support through counselling and therapy.

Mental health and addiction often overlap, and addressing both together is important. However, if a youth does not have substance use or addiction concerns, we are still able and happy to support them.

We provide tailored counselling for a wide range of addictions, including drugs, alcohol, pornography, screen time, phone use, food, shopping, gaming, internet use, and more.

Treatment is customized to each participant and may cover topics such as:

  • Mental health challenges
  • Social struggles
  • Family conflict
  • Setting goals or making changes in substance use (quitting, cutting back, safer decisions)
  • Academic goals
  • Trauma
  • Self-esteem and identity exploration
  • Healthy coping strategies
  • Leisure activities
  • Organization, motivation, and time management
  • Stress management
  • Emotional regulation
  • Coping with grief
  • Relationship struggles with friends, family, or partners
  • Communication and boundary setting
  • Self-advocacy (with family, school, healthcare providers)
  • Resume building and education planning
  • Improving overall health and wellbeing
  • General coaching and support

Yes. Youth may use substances to cope with stress or emotional pain. Our programs address both mental health and substance use together to provide holistic care.

Signs may include changes in behaviour, mood swings, withdrawing from social activities, or difficulty concentrating. If you notice these signs, it is important to seek professional help.

We offer counselling and wellness programs that help build resilience and prepare youth for treatment in the future.

They may be experiencing acute withdrawal. This period can last up to two weeks as the body adjusts to the absence of addictive substances. During this time, youth may show a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.

We support a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress. Our counselling helps youth manage these issues alongside addiction treatment.

Mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and trauma can significantly increase the risk of addiction. Addressing underlying conditions is crucial for effective treatment and long-term recovery.

  • Acute withdrawal occurs right after substance use stops. It can be painful, uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous depending on the substance. This stage usually lasts up to two weeks.
  • Post-acute withdrawal begins after the acute stage. During this period, the brain relearns how to function without substances, causing chemical fluctuations. Youth may experience mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Support during this stage is important for recovery.

Both are approaches to recovery:

  • Abstinence means stopping all substance use completely, often suddenly (“cold turkey”). This approach may work for some but can be dangerous without medical supervision, especially with substances like alcohol or benzodiazepines. With today’s powerful synthetic drugs, medical detox is often a safer first step.
  • Harm reduction focuses on reducing risks and making safer choices. It supports small, gradual changes and empowers youth to make informed decisions, even if they are not ready to quit entirely.

Ray of Hope can tailor treatment using either approach, depending on each youth’s goals.

No. Ray of Hope no longer offers a Youth Residential Treatment program.

If you cannot access detox, reach out to a local RAAM (Rapid Access Addiction Medicine) clinic or a community withdrawal
support program.

In the meantime, monitor your child closely for:

  • Agitation
  • Orientation changes
  • Level of consciousness
  • Hallucinations
  • Mood changes
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

The Substance Use Withdrawal Monitoring Checklist can help track symptoms and guide when to seek medical care or go to an emergency room.

Generally, sessions are individual. With consent, we can hold one or two sessions with others to work on specific topics. If communication or relationship patterns need support, we help youth set boundaries and build self-awareness to improve those relationships.

You must provide your name and date of birth during intake. However, all services follow PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act), meaning your involvement remains confidential. If you request that no one know you are a client, we will honour that within legal and reasonable obligations.

Lasting change rarely happens without internal motivation. While external pressure may help short term, it is often unsustainable and exhausting for families.

If your teen is not ready, our focus is to build a non-judgmental relationship that encourages them to discover their own motivation for change. For parents and guardians, we offer Caregiver Support Services to provide help and guidance.

  • Day Treatment is a structured, intensive program that runs Monday–Friday. It includes school, group therapy, individual counselling, recreation, and life skills training.
  • Community Treatment is more flexible and less intensive. It usually involves weekly one-on-one therapy and is better suited for youth who can manage treatment more independently.
