Hope in Action

Making Waves of Change

Matthew, a local university student, was struggling with social anxiety in his first semester away from home. His anxiety was so severe that he was seriously considering dropping out and moving back home. Someone recommended he try volunteering at Ray of Hope.

It took all the courage he had, but he filled out the application, came in for an interview and committed to one 3-hour shift a week, serving coffee to our Community Centre guests. “Week after week”, he explained “I kept showing up and over the months, I felt my social anxiety evaporating. It was all because I was able to give back and be around others who were also struggling in their own way.”

Matthew has moved out of town but has become a generous donor to Ray of Hope. He said, “Ray of Hope was there when I needed it and now that I have a job and am making an income, I want to give back.”

At Ray of Hope, you’ll often hear us say “Everyone has a story”.  That’s true for our Community Centre guests but it’s also true for our volunteers. Each volunteer comes to Ray of Hope for their own reasons. Each has their own motivations. And each of their lives is changed in different ways because of their volunteer experience.

April is the month we celebrate volunteers at Ray of Hope. This year our theme is Making Waves of Change. During Volunteer Appreciation week, we will celebrate the hundreds of volunteers who are committed to serving those experiencing poverty and homelessness in our community.
